What is Psychotherapy, Counselling & Coaching?

Psychotherapy, counselling, and coaching all offer a confidential space to talk things through and gain clarity, but they differ in focus.

  • Psychotherapy is a deeper, longer-term process that explores how past experiences and recurring patterns shape your present life. It supports lasting change in areas such as anxiety, self-worth, relationships, and mood.
  • Counselling  is usually shorter-term and focused on a specific issue or life event, such as bereavement, separation, job loss, or a major transition.
  • Coaching is future-focused and goal-oriented. It helps you clarify direction, make decisions, and take practical steps forward in your personal or professional life.

About ME

I’m Dean Palmer, a UKCP-accredited psychotherapist, BACP-registered counsellor, and executive coach.

Before training as a therapist, I spent many years working as a television executive in high-pressure creative and corporate environments. This gives me a strong understanding of performance, identity, stress, ambition, and sustained pressure — both professionally and personally.

In my therapy work, I offer a calm, thoughtful space where complex emotional experiences can be explored with care, depth, and without judgement.

Alongside my psychotherapy practice, I am an affiliate of the executive coaching company Morgan Philips, supporting clients navigating leadership challenges, work pressure, and professional transitions.

My work bridges emotional depth with real-world understanding.

my Qualifications

  • MSc (Distinction) in Integrative Psychotherapy – Metanoia Institute and Middlesex University
  • Clinical Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy – Metanoia Institute
  • Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling – Metanoia Institute
  • Business Coaching Certificate – Møller Institute, Churchill College, University of Cambridge
  • Certificate in Trauma and Building Resilience - The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust.

I adhere to the ethical codes of the UKCP and BACP, attend regular supervision, and commit to ongoing professional development. I am fully insured, DBS-checked, and ICO-registered for data protection.
